About Us

The Saint John Pattern of Life Data project will strengthen our business community and drive the economic activity in our local economy. Citizens, businesses and the downtown community at large are engaged with this project to create transformational changes in our community.

The Pattern of Life Data project will enable the collection of new and emergent data sets that will be made part of the Community Data Repository. The project purpose is to better analyze and understand how people interact with our uptown, in both vehicular and pedestrian context.

We will take conditions, such as traffic, parking, weather, cruise ship season and festivals and events, and analyze how they impact the uptown core. This data will be digested and presented to demonstrate trend analyses on the direct result of these conditions on the local economy across all sectors including retail, entertainment, restaurant and tourism. The results will drive and inform capital project decisions, better understand under-performing and over-performing regions in the city and predict and model future decisions based on historical information for any given geographic locations.

The information that these data sets provide is unique to the city of Saint John and will enable better business decision making processes, introduce new revenue opportunities and provide citizens with data backed stories to support business in the city.

Security & Intent

Security

The data collected in the Pattern of Life project is completely ANONYMOUS. We cannot identify whose data we are collecting, all that we know is the MAC ID associated with the device (smartphone or laptop) that a person is using. This MAC (media access control) ID looks something like this:

00-14-22-01-23-45

All that we will use this MAC ID for is to determine the LOCATION and TIME spent at that location, understanding how people are interacting with the uptown core. These addresses (MAC ID’s) are stored within the beacon via wifi connection, and are uploaded to our secure database every 2 minutes.

Security of this data has been at the forefront of this project since inception. We looked at many different platforms, with security and privacy as our most important factors in our decision. With that being said, we decided to use the Azure platform for the Pattern of Life project. Azure is continually updating its platform to make it even more secure and private and is the only public cloud platform to offer continuous security-health monitoring. We hold full confidence in this data platform and welcome any questions regarding the security of data in this project.

Phone providers have built-in privacy such as dynamic MAC Address in devices to ensure anonymity (source). With the concern of privacy at our forefront, HotSpot will never share individual MAC addresses with anyone and instead share unique randomized identifiers through our soon to be released API.

Intent

The data collected in this project will NOT be sold to companies looking to target individuals. It will not be sold or used to advertise directly to users. It will not be used to track individual people; we care about the mass actions, not the individual actions.

Our intent with this data is to stimulate more economic activity, to develop the business community, to capture meaningful data and to engage citizens with complete transparency.

The project purpose is to better analyze and understand both vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns across the Uptown Saint John region. The data collected will predict traffic flow patterns, and provide visualizations and trend analyses on the direct impact it has on the local economy across all sectors; retail, entertainment, restaurant and tourism. The results will drive and inform capital project decisions, better understand underperforming and overperforming regions in the city, and predict and model future decisions based on historical information for any given geographic locations.

The information that these data sets provide is unique to the city of Saint John and will enable better business decision making processes, introduce new revenue opportunities and provide citizens with data backed stories to support business in the city.
